The 2014 version of the Yunca Junior Tour of Southland is to be held fromFriday 3 to Sunday 5 October 2014. The event is open to both male and female cyclists, from Under 19 through to Under 13 grades. The ILT Junior Track Carnival will then feature on the SIT Zero Fees Velodrome on Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 October.
The six-stage event will commence on Friday 3 October with an individual time trial followed by a Kermesse, with the four road stages being raced over the following two days. Entries close on Monday 22 September.
Regarded as one of Australasia’s leading Junior road tours, the Yunca Tour is now in its 31st year of operation. Start making your plans to ride this popular event and we look forward to hosting you here in October. Billets are available on request.
As from 1 July 2014, the U17 Gearing for all BikeNZ Road & Track events becomes a maximum rollout of 7.0 metres. This means that Junior Gearing for U15, U17 and U19 is the same in both New Zealand and Australia.

Cycling Southland's ILT-sponsored October Junior Track Carnival provides the perfect opportunity for Junior cyclists to stretch their legs and test themselves against top class oponents by lighting up the boards over two nights on Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 October 2014. There will be separate races for every category where the organizers deem the entries in that category are sufficient. All age groups will compete for category jerseys (Tour Winner, Sprint Ace and King/Queen of the Mountain)
Race Entry Conditions:
1. Entries will only be accepted via the online form above and must be submitted by 20 September 2013. 2. No entries will be processed until payment has been confirmed with the entry. 3. Entries will not be accepted by telephone. 4. Riders withdrawing after the commencement of the event must advise the Chief Commissaire. 5. Racing is conducted under BikeNZ R+T rules except as stated otherwise.
The 2012 Yunca Tour is again part of the Junior National Points Series.
A Track Carnival will be held in the SIT Zerofees Indoor Velodrome, home of the 2012 UCI Juniors Track World Championships, after the Yunca Junior Tour of Southland on the nights of Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th October 2013. Cycling Southland's Yunca Junior Cycle Tour of Southland was held in contrasting conditions over the weekend.
After Saturday's afternoon stage was abandoned for the first time in the event's 29 year history due to horrendous weather conditions at Te Tipua, yesterday's final stage at Grove Bush was raced under clear skies and sunshine.
The weather wrecked havoc on the Yunca Junior Tour of Southland today, forcing the cancellation of the scheduled afternoon stage at Te Tipua.
The 2012 field gamely battled the elements in the morning third stage on the aptly named "Beast of the East" circuit at Te Tipua in Eastern Southland, with the driving sleet and snow showers and strong cross-winds making for an even more beastly experience than normal. Race Report
Sprint finishes mark opening day of Yunca Tour
05/10/2012 - Torrential rain and driving wind could not stop a gripping first day at the 29th edition of Cycling Southland's Yunca Junior Tour of Southland today. A record field of Australasia's best junior road cyclists took to Teretonga Raceway to contest an Individual Time Trial and afternoon kermesse races across the eight separate age categories.
The 2011 Junca Junior Tour of Southland featured over 180 riders from all over New Zealand and Australia who took to the highways of Southland in what is fast becoming one of the premier junior racing events in Australasia. It was podium finishes all round for Southlanders on the first day of competition with U19 Makayla Smith, Emma Cumming and Nick Kergozou all securing golds, along with a silver for Elite sprinter Steph McKenzie.
Hello for another week and a reminder that there will be some tight and rather enclosed space around the track over the coming week as the Smiths City Expo sets up and opens to the public from Friday to Saturday, while we largely have full use of the track (without motorbike use sorry) during this time there is the one exception of the following:
Ten cyclists will be departing from Bluff on Friday 11 October and, over 22 days, will make their way up to Cape Reinga - a staggering distance of 2330kms!! The purpose is to "Ride Out of the Blue," is to raise awareness of depression and suicide, and raise money for the Mental Health Foundation of NZ to implement mindfulness programmes into NZ primary schools for prevention and early intervention of mental health problems later in life.
