Catlin's Great Escape Recreational Ride
23rd and 24th May 2009 Tipped to be New Zealand's premier coastal bike ride, The Catlins Great Escape is now open for entries. This unique bike journey will be held on the 23rd and 24th May 2009 and cyclists can avoid a late-entry fee by booking before the 1st February 2009. The Catlins is one of life's must-do places to experience, says Tourism Catlins Projects Co-ordinator, Kim Dodds. "This will be a wild and exciting ride. It will be full of adventure and fun and will be an escape from everyday constraints. It will be a ride that should be shared with friends and family along a rugged coastline and through magnificent old-growth forests." Mrs Dodds said that local residents and businesses have been strong in their support of the event. "We are particularly delighted that the Mataura Licensing Trust has backed the event as the main sponsor," she said, "and Tourism Catlins would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their support and their vision with this unique event." The two day, 80km cycling tour starts at Waikawa and follows the southern Scenic Route through the Catlins Coastal Rainforest Park. The overnight stop is at Tautuku Outdoor Education centre and the ride finished in Owaka the next day. Tourism Catlins will accept up to 110 entries with potential riders being urged to enter as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
