COACHING NEWSMasters Coaching Update - June 2010On Wednesday the 3rd June Cycling Southland held a coaching forum targeted as masters cyclists. This forum was to give Masters direction with upcoming events and an overview on how to prepare for these events more effectively. These events include: proposed August Track festival, Southland Road Champs, Millers Flat to Mosgiel, National Team Time Trial Championships, December Festival of Speed, Southland Track Champs, New Zealand Masters Games, New Zealand Track Champs and in 2011 the World Masters Games. Eleven riders attended and we threw around some ideas to help riders gain information to help them achieve their goals. It was evident with this group the wide range of goals that people expressed an interest to train for or why they are involved in the sport. One of the main themes of the night was discussing how to train for each event more specifically. Training to mimic the demands of the event across cadences, energy systems, distances and repetitions of efforts. Below are some ideas the meeting agreed with which Cycling Southland will look to implement over the coming weeks/months. • Reintroduction of track training specific BOW training nights. Waine Harding and Mike Cooper have volunteered to Coordinate these sessions. • Regular Forums on Specific Topics, eg: use of Heart rate Monitors, Nutrition , Warmup and Stretching etc. • Regular get-togethers, to informally discuss training modes etc, what has worked for some people which others may look to drive. This can be organised by riders . post BOW WOW sessions could be an ideal time for these. • Generic Programmes for different types of riders for different phases of the year. These can be manipulated by individuals / Coaches to suit riders own lifestyle and goals.
