Greetings for another Tuesday, today we celebrate Cycling Southland winning the Supreme Award at the 2013 TrustPower Invercargill Southland Community Awards, held at the Civic Theatre last night Read all about it here. It is another truly significant acknowledgement – following the BikeNZ Road and Track Volunteer Awards – Club of the Year Award earlier this year – and is again deserved recognition and testament to the thousands of hours our volunteers give each year to assist with events, regular sessions and racing both on the track and road. Without each and every single one of you, Cycling Southland could not achieve so much and perform to such an outstanding level on the national and international scene. We thank you all for your ongoing support and tireless effort

On a more sombre note – it is with the greatest of sadness that we acknowledge the passing last night of one of these highly respected volunteers and a regular road race competitor Grant Toomey. It is a huge shock to everyone who knew and loved him and he will always be remembered as a great competitive cyclist both on the track and the road and a hugely likeable club member who was always willing to give of his time to help out volunteering at events. Tooms was the ultimate ‘top bloke’ and will be hugely missed by us all. We know you will join with us in offering our deepest sympathy and  warmest of wishes to his family during this most difficult time.

Now to the business ahead …

Welcome back and congrats function
Our Southland trio for the 2014 Junior Worlds Track Championships BikeNZ  track team have come home from Glasgow as the most successful local Junior Worlds representatives in history, having had a hand in all five of the team’s medals this year – and we are all hugely proud of their achievements.

To celebrate the occasion and welcome Jeremy Presbury, Josh Haggerty and Liam Aitcheson back home, we are hosting a welcome back free social evening this coming Monday 16 September, from 7pm in the Sarah Ulmer Lounge.

This is great chance to hear all about their nine-strong BikeNZ team build up in Germany, their success – and challenges – during the Junior Worlds and where to next for them personally both on and off the bike and through the track and road events over the coming months. This will include a question and answer opportunity with the guys as a thank you for all the support from everyone who followed their progress so closely in Glasgow.

If you are keen to come along and attend this get together, please email Melissa office@cyclingsouth.org.nz and we can determine numbers and offer a little light refreshment.

Coaching Forum7pm Tonight
A coaching forum/get together for all those currently coaching, or interested in becoming involved, will be held tonight in the Sarah Ulmer Lounge.  We’ll have a beer for Tooms and have a light meeting after that.
