Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another week,
Well it was wonderful news at the Cycling New Zealand AGM awards night again on Saturday with Southland featuring prominently again this year.
The Tour of Southland was named the Event of the Year, Steve Canny received the Services to Cycling award, while World Championship winning men's sprint trio of Sam Webster, Ethan Mitchell and Southland's Eddie Dawkins won the prestigious Malayan Cup. That is some major kudos for you all – Bruce Ross, his family and his massive entourage of loyal volunteers, Steve Canny and all you have given to cycling over many, many years and Eddie and his team mates Sam and Ethan – fantastic work and huge congratulations to you all. Academy Southland intake 2017
To top that all off, cyclists again featured prominently in another local announcement of Academy Southland’s new intake for 2017. Huge congrats to Tayla Lumsden and Emily Paterson who are among this year’s athletes and also to Tayla (again), Corbin Strong, Hamish Keast, Ewan Syme and para-cyclist Hannah Pascoe who have all been named as National Pathway to Podium Southland athletes. That’s an epic result and every one of you should be extremely proud! Read the full story
Architecture Unlimited Corporate Pursuit format changes
Following on from feedback from last year, we’ve changed the structure of the divisions. With an eye on the overall goal to introduce people to the sport through a friendly collaborative team racing environment and to provide a unique team building experience for businesses, these changes will make it easier for new teams to take part.
We have businesses wanting to enter teams but don't fall into the original 'corporate' definition. Some businesses simply don't have six employees required to make up the numbers.
The two divisions are:
A Corporate division - made up only of staff directly employed by the company/business.
An All-Comers division - made up of not just employees but family members, two businesses (or more) joined together, friends coming together etc.
We want to encourage people to take part in this fun event while maintaining the spirit of the competition and think this is an excellent way to achieve that. There will of course be prizes for both divisions.
A reminder that Corporate Pursuit entries are now open and you can register online to get your early bird discount by registering before 22 May. Check out all the details here
Anyone wishing to help coach a team this year please contact me at the office.

Road Race Fundraiser Quiz Night
Another great date for the diary is Thursday 22 June when we will be hosting a road cycling Quiz Night fundraiser. Get your team of four together and head along to help pay for traffic management services and keep road cycling races safe in Southland. The Quiz will be held at Eastern Suburbs (Glengarry Tavern), team entry is just $20 and there will be plenty of raffles as well. Register your team with me [email protected]
Fundraising garage sale
Before you chuck anything out, can we ask that you consider keeping aside anything that may be suitable for the Cycling Southland fundraising GARAGE SALE in July. Remember the old idiom “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”.
This is a major fundraising venture for Cycling Southland so if you have anything at all, no matter how big or small, please put it aside and we will see if we can gain a profit off it. We do have some room to store some “goods” so please contact Bruce at Cycling Southland if you have anything you would like stored rather than dump it.
Rec rides
Although Cycling Southland doesn’t organise recreational rides, we are keen to help promote those to new riders or riders looking for a group to ride with. We know of the First @ Windsor and the Cycling Rec Group, but are there others out there that we can publicise to encourage more people to ride? Contact the office if you’d like your group to be promoted.
The Big Bike Night Film Night
A collection of outstanding short films from around the world is heading south for an Invercargill screening and is getting sell-out responses as it works its way down the country. Check out all the details and read a review Sounds like a great option for an enjoyable and warm night out and there are door sales available.
So another great week of achievements across the board for sure. Well done to everyone and let’s keep this club humming through the winter. Don’t forget to check out the weekly track schedule for when you can head on down for a roll during the cooler nights.
Take care out there everyone
