In its 26th year, the Yunca Tour is now the premier multi-stage road cycling tour for junior cyclists in New Zealand. Last year 138 cyclists entered the event including many New Zealand representatives and 23 Australian representative riders with a number of those riders now representing their countries at this year's Junior Worlds in Italy.

The Yunca Tour is "the" road cycling tour that junior cyclists work towards during the road racing calendar. Southland cycling has real depth with very competitive cyclists and in the past some of our best cyclists have learnt valuable lessons about competitive cycling during the Yunca Tour. Tom Scully, Eddie Dawkins, Cameron Karwowski, Cathy Jordon, Sequoia Cooper, Matt Randall, Glen Thomson and Glenn McLeay, just to mention a few, are some of Southland's top riders who had their first exposure to multi-staged competitive road racing in the Yunca.

The Yunca is a safe and competitive course. Many months of work is put into the event to ensure the event runs smoothly, from working with the NZ Police and Councils to traffic management plans and consents to arranging sponsorship, billets with the help of Cycling Southland and a significant number of volunteers who help with road marshalling, rider support, judging, time keeping and hospitality.

Sier Vermunt the 2010 Tour director is excited about this year's Yunca tour and the possibility of a large number of Australian juniors entering. ‘We have got some of the best roads in the country to race on and Southlanders get right behind the Yunca".

A Track Carnival will be held in the ILT Indoor Velodrome after the Yunca Junior Tour of Southland on the nights of Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th October 2010. All Tour riders are eligible to enter. The cost is U17 and below $5 per night, U19 and above $10 per night. Entry fee payable on the night.

"The Yunca U17 Tour of Southland is about setting goals, aiming high and working hard, then seizing the opportunities that hard work produces", he says. "These are the same values I have installed in our business, and so the sponsorship is a very good fit."

FROM YUNCA TOUR TO COMMONWEALTH GOLD

Glen Thomson commenced his racing career as a 12 year old and competed regularly in the Yunca Tour.

Commencing as a B grade rider, Thomson won several stages in the Yunca Tour and some prominent overall places during his junior years, but was never successful in adding his name to the distinguished list of winners.

Thomson went on to become a force in New Zealand cycling winning many titles and consistently representing New Zealand over many years. His career highlight came in 1998 with an outstanding ride to win the Gold medal in the Points Race at the Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games.

Thomson attributes learning the art of cycling by competing in events such as the Yunca Tour and has many fond memories of the Southland event.
