The Olympic qualifying event in Cambridge this week has provided an ideal litmus test for New Zealand cycling coaches as they plot their path to the 2016 Rio Olympics and beyond.
Olympic medallist Simon van Velthooven showed a glimpse of his world class abilities to win an exciting keirin final at the Avanti BikeNZ Classic in Cambridge tonight.
It was podium finishes all round for Southlanders on the first day of competition with U19 Makayla Smith, Emma Cumming and Nick Kergozou all securing golds, along with a silver for Elite sprinter Steph McKenzie.
