What a week! Tumultuous weather across the country, the announcement of new naming rights for both the SIT Veldrome and ILT Stadium Southland – so it’s not just the wintry blast making life very cool at the moment! We’re also noticing the change of vista with the back straight imminently coming into view as the scaffolding starts to come down.

WHAT do you reckon is one of the main reasons most kids quit sport? While you're pondering, let's absorb this stat from the US: Each year 20 million children register for baseball, soccer, football, hockey and other competitive sports; about 70 per cent of those will quit by age 13.

Of all the sporting victories recorded over the weekend, Saturday's announcement regarding the securing of naming rights for the rebuilt Stadium Southland and the Velodrome was a biggest win for the sporting sector.

Teenager Hamish Keast has succeeded on three sporting fronts - road cycling, mountainbiking and karting.

Over our history Cycling Southland has featured as a prominent part of the local and national media. Our historian and memorabilia guru Julian Ineson has found a wee gem about our fantastic club back in the 1963.

Hi everyone for another Tuesday and we hope this finds you well and that you’re all managing to fend off the winter heebie-jeebies that are circulating en masse at this time of the year! Well cycling has been all about headlines lately – and fantastic ones at that! 

One of the blessings of working at Cycling Southland over the last three years is the fact that I get to witness outstanding performances first hand across over the myriad of events we deliver in the deep south.

Southland’s Eddie Dawkins has continued his strong form with victory in the Grand Prix cycling meet in Paris today.

Well I am back in Valencia again. It seems like not much has changed since we were here last year, however the feel of the team has changed a lot. Since our last visit New Zealand sprint records have been consistently broken - World Cup, World Championship and Olympic medals won.

Welcome to another week and it has certainly been a little cooler in recent days. However, it is incredible to think the shortest day of the year is just 10 days away and there’s plenty of action on the track with sessions in full swing to keep everyone’s adrenalin pumping!

A breakout performance at this year's club road nationals in Queenstown helped confirm Tom Sexton as Cycling Southland's junior rider of the year at the club's annual awards recently.

Southland's Eddie Dawkins won the sprint final at the Grand Prix track cycling meet in Valencia, Spain yesterday.

Cycling featured strongly at the 2013 ILT Southland Sports Awards on Friday night with a hat-trick of success across the categories.
