9/12/2011 - The opening night of the 2012 Southland Track Cycling Championships featured Time Trials and Scratch Races.
The first event on the programme saw a closely fought battle in the Under 15 girls 500m Time Trial with Aly Doherty taking the gold medal after completing her two laps in 45.140 seconds, just 0.4 seconds ahead on Madeleine Gough with Emma Cumming less than a second further back in third (pictured left).
The Under 15 Boys went the way of defending champion Josh Carpenter who took over a second off his 2011 winning time with a 38.750 to claim the win by half a second over Hamish Beadle with Hayden Strong grabbing bronze.
The Under 17 Girls saw Laura Heywood defend her title with a 40.090 to see off a fast-improving Makayla Smith who powered her way to silver ahead of Brooke Brazier. In the boys grade Nick Kergozou did it comfortably, his 36.430 the fastest by the best part of two seconds from Liam Haggerty and Josh van den Arend.
The Masters Women categories were again dominated by Jacqui Dearlove and Erin Criglington. Dearlove recording 39.310 – just a tenth of a second outside her national record – to take gold from Marie Muhl and Sam Kopae in Masters 2.
Likewise, Criglington went withing a tenth of a second of the National Record she set at this year’s Track Nationals with a 38.860 to take another Southland title from Kylea Gough and Nicola Stevens (pictured right).
Peter Grandiek claimed the Masters 3 Men gold with 50.640 while the Masters 2 gold went to National Champion Roger Nicholas with a 37.860 over Neil Familton and Wally Kopae.
Kate Dunlevey showed impressive form in the Under 19 Women grade to take gold with a 37.980 over Jenn Muhl while Steph McKenzie took out the Elite Woman Southland title with a 36.890 with Kylie Young taking silver. Otago’s Katie Schofield who also entered the event recorded the fastest time of the competition with a 36.530.
The Masters 1 Men 750m Time Trial turned into a three way battle between Mike White (gold with 52.480), Derek Tan (silver) and Garry Smith (bronze). Those three would end up seeing a lot of the podium over the weekend.
The feature event of the weekend was the Stuart MacLean Trophy for the Open Men 1000m Time Trial. Josh Haggerty riding his first ever Kilo made everyone sit up and take notice recording a 1:09.680 which was in the end good enough to claim third overall and the Under 19 gold medal. In the penultimate heat, Brad Tuhi went top with a 1:07.651 before Sean Fox (pictured left) went out strong and did enough to hold on … just. Foxy recording a 1:07.621 to claim the win by just 0.03 seconds and etch his name on one of the most prestigious trophies in Southland track cycling.
The evening culminated with Scratch races across the various age categories. Emma Cumming won the sprint finish in the Under 15 girls race from Maddy Gough and Aly Doherty. Hayden Strong, finished strongly (excuse the pun) to take out the boys race from Hamish Beadle and Josh Carpenter while Laura Heywood would not be denied in the Under 17 Girls taking the win from Brooke Brazier and a fast-finishing Libby Bayne.
Neil Familton successfully defended his Masters 2 Scratch race title with victory over Neil Jamieson with impressive para-cyclist Nathan Smith, brother of All Black Conrad placing third overall. Grant Toomey took the bronze medal as third Southlander home. The Masters 1 Men didn’t disappoint with another great finish, Mike White again taking gold from Garry Smith with the one-and-only Derek Tan taking bronze.
The Elite & Under 19 Women’s race also provided a sprint finish (pictured right), Kylie Young kicking at the right time to claim back-to-back scratch race titles over Sequoia Cooper. Jenn Muhl took third overall and the Under 19 gold from Kate Dunlevey in fourth.
And the Elite and Under 19 Men also featured plenty of action start to finish, with Brad Tuhi claiming the win by half a bike length from Hamish Tomlinson and Otago’s Patrick Jones. Matt Zenovich placed third to take the Under 19 gold medal.
