10/12/2011 - Another swag of Southland titles were handed out at the ILT Velodrome in the Sprint and Points Race competitions.
Laura Heywood confirmed her top seeding in the Under 17 Girls sprint, recording 13.531 in qualifying and then she and Libby Bayne qualified for the final following their three-up semifinal ride. Heywood proved too strong to take the gold medal two-straight with Bayne earning a deserved silver and Mayayla Smith bronze.
The Under 17 Boys saw Nick Kergozou take charge, qualifying fastest with 12.061 and then having too much gas for Josh van den Arend in the final. Liam Haggerty held off Anton O’Connell in the bronze medal ride.
In the Elite and Under 19 Women, Junior Worlds medalist Stephanie McKenzie showed she will have no problems stepping up to the Elite ranks this season, recording 12.158 in qualifying and dispatching Katie Schofield of Otago two-straight in the final. Kate Dunlevey took the Under 19 gold with two wins over Jenn Muhl in their final.
The Under 19 Men saw the emergence of a hugely impressive Jeremy Presbury who staked his claim as one of the most impressive riders of the Championships. His flying 200m time of 11.797 was easily the fastest in qualifying and he took gold with two-straight wins in the semifinal and in the final against Paddy Daly.
Ethan Thwaites and Tom Vessey fought out a close battle in the ride for bronze, with Vessey claiming the last medal on offer.
Cycling Southland’s Matt Archibald surprised even himself with an electric 10.457 in qualifying to record a new personal best and then take a two-straight final win over Karl Watson.
In the Points Races, Hayden Strong came from behind to claim gold, winning the final sprint in the Under 15 Boys race to leap into top spot over Josh Carpenter and Hamish Beadle. Madeleine Gough and Aly Doherty shared the sprint wins in the Under 15 girls with Gough earning gold courtesy of her win in the final sprint.
The Under 17 Girls also came down to the final sprint after Mikayla Smith went straight on the attack to feature strongly in the first two sprints and claim an early lead, before Laura Heywood timed her run perfectly to earn a single point win over Smith with Georgia Vessey sneaking in to the bronze medal position.
Sequoia Cooper controlled the Elite and Under 19 race to take a comfortable victory. Kylie Young took line honours in the last sprint to jump into second spot while Jenn Muhl claimed the Under 19 gold with fourth place overall.
The Men’s race was dominated by Central Otago-Wakatipu’s Liam Aitcheson in the day's most impressive individual preformance. He took a lap on the field along with club-mate Tom Vessey and Southland’s Brad Tuhi and then launched attack after attack to ride away with a hugely impressive overall victory and take the Under 19 gold.
Tuhi finished in second spot overall and took the Elite title with Vessey’s third overall being good enough for the Under 19 silver.
