11/12/2011 - The final day of competition at the 2012 Southland Track Champs saw Individual Pursuits and Kerins for the big guys and girls and Derbys for the not so big.
It also featured the debut of our Under 13 boys grade which provided some spectacular finishes with a 750m Derby, 250m Time Trial and 1.5km Scratch Race.
Corbin Strong proved to be the rider to beat claiming the Derby gold from Taz O’Connell and Hunter Gough (pictured left), blitzing around a standing lap in 23.025 to win the Time Trial from O’Connell and Flynn Sinclair and winning the Scratch Race from O’Connell and Gough. This new category addition to the Southland Champs will now no doubt continue after the great racing we watched on Sunday.
The other derbys saw Aly Doherty take out the Under 15 three-lapper from Emma Cumming and Madeleine Gough while Hamish Beadle took the honours in the Under 15 Boys over Hayden Strong and Josh Carpenter (pictured right).
Laura Heywood rode a controlled race in the Under 17 Girls Individual Pursuit final to make it a clean sweep of the grade, beating a gallant Brooke Brazier in the final by 2.8 seconds – Brooke taking five seconds off her qualifying time in pushing Laura all the way to the line. Georgia Vessey took out the bronze with a one second win over Sophie McMurdo.
The Under 17 Boys was taken out by an impressive Nick Kergozou who appears in good early-season form. His 2:33.073 was easily fastest with Josh van den Arend taking silver and Anton O’Connell bronze.
The Masters 2 Women IP was won in style by Jacqui Dearlove (pictured left)over Sam Kopae with Marie Muhl taking third while the Masters 1 saw both finals ride eand in catches with Erin Criglington overtaking Kylea Gough and Nicola Stevens catching Sonya Barton.
Peter Grandiek continued his build-up for the Masters Games with gold in the Masters 3 Men in a time of 3:38.426 while Neil Familton earned gold in Masters 2 over Neil Jamieson and Mark Day.
The Masters 1 Men finals promised much and did not disappoint. Just a second separated Garry Smith and Mike White in qualifying and when the two met in the gold medal ride it was nearly as close, White claiming a fourth gold medal with a 3:43.601 by under two seconds from Smith. Derek Tan took bronze over Andrew Lienert.
The Under 19 Men Finals featured the most spectacular battle for third between Josh Haggerty and Tom Vessey. The two could not be separated from start to finish. After one kilometer, Haggerty lead by 0.128 seconds, after two kilometers just 0.147 seconds and at the finish line Josh’s victory margin was a mere 0.115.
The final saw yet another ultra-impressive ride from Liam Aitcheson (right). After qualifying second for the ride for gold behind Matt Zenovich he took five and a half seconds off his time to take the win with a 3:38.251.
The Elite Men’s final was taken out by Brad Tuhi who also went faster in his second ride of the day, covering the 4000 metre distance in 4:48.082.
The Championships concluded with the Keirins, including the first ever Masters Men event. This new addition to the National Champs Programme featured a large combined field and there was no surprise when Mike White added yet another gold to his weekend tally with victory from Garry Smith and Scott Milne.
Steph McKenzie controlled the Senior Women’s Keirin from start to finish taking gold with Jacqui Dearlove sticking on her wheel to grab silver and Kate Dunlevey was third across the line to grab the Under 19 gold medal.
And the last event of the programme, the Elite and Under 19 Men’s Keirin (pictured left) was taken out by Matt Archibald who disappeared off into the distance with a lap and a half to go to claim the win from Patrick Jones with Jeremy Presbury capping an impressive champs with third and the Under 19 gold medal.
Following the event the Cycling Southland selectors named their training squads, leading in to the Elite and Age Group Track Nationals in February/March. Click here for the full squads.
