Outstanding form at this week’s national championships has led to the selection of six riders from New Zealand’s burgeoning sprint programme in the 15-strong BikeNZ team for this month’s UCI World Cup in London.

The Alpine Classic is open to any road or mountain bike rider, allowing individuals and teams of between two and four to participate in the 140km ride from Queenstown to Wanaka and return, via the Crown Range.

The unheralded fast starters had their chance to shine on the final day of action at the RaboDirect Track National Championships in Invercargill. Auckland’s Ethan Mitchell and Dunedin’s Katie Schofield showed their ability to burst out of the blocks, a vital part of BikeNZ’s team sprint hopes, as they grabbed national titles in impressive fashion on the super-fast boards at the Cycling Southland Velodrome.

Natasha Hansen continued to stake her claim for Olympic selection on the second night of the RaboDirect Track National Championships in Invercargill tonight. Hansen defeated fellow Southlander  Steph McKenzie in two straight rides to win the women’s sprint national title after smashing the New Zealand 200m time trial record in qualifying this morning.

The second day of the RaboDirect Elite Track National Championships started with a qualifying session to set up some strong sprint duels for tonight’s session.
