Hi everyone for another Tuesday and we hope this finds you well and that you’re all managing to fend off the winter heebie-jeebies that are circulating en masse at this time of the year! Well cycling has been all about headlines lately – and fantastic ones at that! 

One of the blessings of working at Cycling Southland over the last three years is the fact that I get to witness outstanding performances first hand across over the myriad of events we deliver in the deep south.

Southland’s Eddie Dawkins has continued his strong form with victory in the Grand Prix cycling meet in Paris today.

Well I am back in Valencia again. It seems like not much has changed since we were here last year, however the feel of the team has changed a lot. Since our last visit New Zealand sprint records have been consistently broken - World Cup, World Championship and Olympic medals won.

Welcome to another week and it has certainly been a little cooler in recent days. However, it is incredible to think the shortest day of the year is just 10 days away and there’s plenty of action on the track with sessions in full swing to keep everyone’s adrenalin pumping!

A breakout performance at this year's club road nationals in Queenstown helped confirm Tom Sexton as Cycling Southland's junior rider of the year at the club's annual awards recently.

Thanks to Queen's Birthday we missed last week. I know, that's the reason you've been feeling something was missing for the last seven days, right?

Southland's Eddie Dawkins won the sprint final at the Grand Prix track cycling meet in Valencia, Spain yesterday.

Cycling featured strongly at the 2013 ILT Southland Sports Awards on Friday night with a hat-trick of success across the categories.

On Saturday Joe Chapman won the 75km Waide Classic but Southlanders really made their mark in the overall final results.

Right on the heels of a national award recognising the huge contribution made by Cycling Southland’s volunteers and officials, the local club tonight took the opportunity to salute its own team at the annual awards evening, held at Ascot Park Hotel.

Cycling Southland was named Club of the Year at the BikeNZ Road and Track Volunteer Awards in Auckland on Saturday night.

During the months of March and April, the Cycling Southland executive have been involved with the initiation of our strategic planning process. This planning will set our direction over the coming years.

We were delighted that the weather forecasters were wrong in their predictions and Saturday dawned clear, sunny and calm – perfect weather for the final race of the SouthPort Criterium Series!

Once again there is a stack of news to share today but the first cab off the ranks is that next week is our annual prizegiving and we need to confirm ticket numbers for catering purposes by THIS FRIDAY (17 May) please.

Sophie Williamson (H & J Smiths) had a good final winning hit out before leaving next week to head to San Francisco in the United States and start a contract with women’s pro team Vanderkitten, as she won the third round of the Benchmark Homes Women's Elite Cycling Series on the challenging Hanmer to Kaikoura course on Saturday.

Southland rider Cam Karwowski will race in a strong BikeNZ European campaign when he lines up with an impressive eight-strong team to contest the prestigious Olympias Tour in the Netherlands starting on Monday (NZ time).
