2015 Sec school road champs 1Sixty young cycling enthusiasts descended on Teretonga on Tuesday for the annual Otago-Southland Secondary School Road Championships with a strong team from James Hargest College ready to the battle to retain the overall points trophy from 2014.

Hot off the heels of the 2015 Age Group Track Nationals in Cambridge, a particularly strong field of under 17 boys and under 15 girls representing James Hargest College, were certainly able to step up to the challenge of achieving placings across all events and secure the trophy for another respective year.

A highlight for this year’s event was another strong field of 18 girls travelling form Columba College in Dunedin and a total of 10 schools from throughout, Otago, Central and Southland being represented at the event.

Under 15 Hargest student Emily Paterson continued her strong form from the Track Nationals to take out both the road and individual time trial races while team mate Camryn Akeroyd put in consistent form for two seconds. Under 17 Hargest student Hamish Keast stepped up to take two firsts, along with under 19 Tom Sexton who continues his strong run on both the track and road. Under 17 Hargest rider Sam Miller also continued to demonstrate his pace with two second placings while Corbin Strong (Southland Boys) completed both third placings.

Track Nationals Double New Zealand record breaker Ellesse Andrews, from Mount Aspiring College, was just pipped for gold in the time trial by college mate Phoebe Young, but came back strong to claim the U17 girls title in the road race.
