Cycling Southland's Phillipa Gray and Laura Thompson have won bronze in the Pursuit at the UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships in Los Angeles this afternoon.
They beat Great Britain home in the bronze medal ride by over two seconds to reach the podium. After trailing early the pair built into the ride and took control of the race over the final kilometre to stretch out to a comfortable victory.
They qualified fourth fastest with a 3:39.659 behind Ireland and two Great Britain combinations and backed up magnificently to claim their first World medal.
The opening day of competition also featured the Women's Category C time trials where New Zealand's Fiona Southorn finished in fifth place in Cat 5 and Great Britain team pursuiter Sarah Storey claimed gold.
Gray and Thompson back up tomorrow in their favoured 1000m Time Trial.
