18/02/2011 - Commonwealth Games road cycling hero Gordon McCauley has been confirmed as a starter in this year's Tour de Lakes.

McCauley, who signed off his international career by helping Hayden Roulston win silver in Delhi last year, has not ridden the annual mini-tour since winning a snow-affected race in 1996 when it was still held over Queen's Birthday weekend.

Race director Allan Dunn said McCauley, a two-time Tour of Southland winner, had been hoping to race last year's event, but it had proved too costly.

He will be on the start line for the April 22 to 25 race, but is hoping to pick up some sponsorship to cover some of his costs.

Dunn said McCauley was willing to wear a sponsor's jersey in return for his $240 airfares.

"He said he will come down and win it, which is typical Gordie," Dunn said.

The annual Tour de Lakes takes in stages around Cromwell, Queenstown and Te Anau across three grades and last year included a women's section.
