New Zealand has won the gold medal in the men’s team sprint on the opening night of the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in London.

They needed a powerful final lap from Eddie Dawkins to edge past surprise finalists Netherlands in the final.

The trio of Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Dawkins won the world title in 2014 in Cali and the silver last year in Paris after being relegated.

They were behind at the 500m mark by 0.1 seconds before Dawkins finished things off with New Zealand clocking 43.257s, to be more than 0.2s ahead of the Netherlands.

Germany pushed defending world champions France out of the medals in the ride off for the bronze medal.
