Fulton won her heat and was second behind the outstanding German rider Mathilde Gros in the semifinal, while Andrews progressed after winning her repechage and finished behind her teammate in the semifinal.

Both Kiwis had outside draws, pushing them to the back of the field and while both made big moves, with Andrews looping the field with a lap to go, they had to be content with fifth and sixth placings.

Emily Shearman (Palmerston North) and Nicole Shields (Clyde) teamed up to finish fifth in the two-rider Madison over 20kms, won by Italy. The Kiwis in the hunt for the bronze medal with France and the Netherlands with French pair winning the final double-points sprint to catapult them into the bronze medal position.
