Hello for another week and a reminder that there will be some tight and rather enclosed space around the track over the coming week as the Smiths City Expo sets up and opens to the public from Friday to Saturday, while we largely have full use of the track (without motorbike use sorry) during this time there is the one exception of the following:
Baxter & Neilson – postponed this Friday
Please note that series 5 of the Baxter and Neilson racing this Friday night has been postponed one week to Friday 26 September, due to the Expo in the Velodrome closing the track at 8pm. Junior racing will go ahead 6-8pm as usual.
Meanwhile, many sessions will probably find it easiest to operate from the east end of the track where the water fountain is and we will accordingly move the track bikes there – as we have done in the past during this time.

Gorge Road Memorial Weekend Handicap
A reminder that this weekend is the Gorge Road Classic race weekend featuring the Martin Verbeek and Murray McLean senior trophies and the Curtis Dunn Memorial for juniors. Please ensure you get entries in by Thursday at midday – seniors entry on the day is $20 for the classic races and note that the prizegiving will be held at the Kew Bowling Club at the completion of the senior race – not the Ulmer Lounge as stated in the programme due to the Expo taking up the Corporate lounges for staff over the weekend – Please bring a plate (with something on it … ha ha) to share. Anyone able to volunteer with STMS, timekeeping and judging please let us know at the office and thank you. A reminder too that it is 10am registration in McQuarrie Street in the Kew Bowling Club parking/old tennis court area for a 10.30am race start. The Curtis Dunn Memorial Junior race will meet at the Gorge Road School at midday for a 12.30pm race start – entry is $5.
Thanks to Neil, Lindsay and team for getting through the earlier Browns Graded race last week.
Yunca billets and entries
We still need a couple more beds for billeting Yunca entries please, let me know at the office if you can help out – very much appreciated!
Entries close Monday 22 September, so make sure you get organised now and register online
NZ Principals Conference
The club has the opportunity to provide some demonstration racing as part of the upcoming NZ Principals Conference in September. We are keen to get a group of U17-Elite riders together for some demonstrations racing on:
Wednesday 24 September: 5:45pm – 6:45pm
Thursday 25 September: 7:00pm-7:45pm
If you are available please contact the office confirming which days you can assist by this Friday 19 September
Bikes in Tunnel
Following the events over the past week and coming week in the Velodrome, it has highlighted the need to try and keep the tunnel railing free from members bikes being padlocked there. While we understand it is a major inconvenience to have to move them, we will try and ensure an additional bike rack is set up in the bike storage area for these bikes to be stored and locked up. This will happen once the expo has vacated the building next week.
Noel Leeming special member offer
This Saturday and Sunday Noel Leeming are offering a special member rate of cost + 10% on all products in conjunction with a Junior Club fundraiser being held over the weekend. This is an excellent deal, so please ensure you get down and support the offer with any appliance or household goods you may be needing right now.
Finally a huge good luck to our commissaire secretary extraordinaire Erin Criglington as she heads to Cambridge to take on the onerous task of manually working through all the results again at the BikeNZ Tier 1 and World Cup events over this weekend. You are truly a mega woman Erin! Also all the best to our riders at the event – Emma Cumming, Makayla Smith, Nick Kergozou, Tom Sexton, Hamish Beadle, Pieter Bulling, Liam Aitcheson, Ben Stewart, Matt Archibald, Eddie Dawkins, Jeremy Presbury, Kirstie James and Steph McKenzie – we hope you are flying on the boards up north – go fast!!
