Hi everyone for another week and what a week it has been …

Junior Worlds
Awesome. That’s the best word to describe the performance of Cycling Southland riders at the Junior World Track Champs in Switzerland. Absolutely awesome.

We can now boast four world champs in Emma Cumming and Ellesse Andrews (team sprint), Tom Sexton (team pursuit) and Bradly Knipe (sprint), along with silvers to Tom (madison), Nicole Shields (TP), Brad (TT), and a bronze to Ellesse (IP). Together they were involved in seven of the nine medals the NZ team won. Outstanding.

This is a stunning effort and is a tribute to not only the hard work they’ve put in, but also to all their coaches, to their parents, to the support the club has given them, and to the facility we have.

I emailed our key stakeholders this week to highlight the results and to thank them for the support and foresight they had to build a facility 10 years ago. And with Eddie a good chance to secure a gold in Rio, what a year this is shaping up to be!

Return home
Tom and Bradly will be returning to Invercargill on the 1.35pm flight on Thursday. The office will be closed and we’ll be going to the airport to welcome them home – please come and join us to congratulate them and give them a return they deserve. Emma and Ellesse will be returning to Cambridge, while Nicole flies into Queenstown.

Cheers Mark

A reminder about the revised schedule which includes a second Track Start beginner adults session on Tuesdays 6-7pm

The sprint sessions, coached by Nick Harris on Mondays and Wednesdays 7-9pm are open to anyone, while due to popular demand we’ve introduced an open coached Endurance sessions with Kurt Black on Tuesdays 7-9pm.

We’re also running a post-Corporate Pursuit training session with Glen Thomson on Thursdays 8-9pm to help those new riders get a taste for other types of racing. We urge you to take advantage of this or to encourage colleagues etc to have a go.

Juniors
There is also now Under 15 Squad running again on Mondays 4-6pm, an advanced student session called the Rockets with Neil Jamieson 4-5pm Tuesdays, followed by a one hour 5-6pm secondary students session with Dave Beadle, along with the regular Wheelers and Flyers kids sessions with Fergus Canny. If anyone is unsure where they should be attending talk to your coaches or the office.

A final reminder that riders must have the $100 two-hour session cards for two-hour squads and other sessions – this includes juniors. Two ticks will be taken off the one-hour cards if you turn up for two hours. The two-hour cards work out at just $8.33 for two hours.

Bike Set Up
Further to last week’s news, Gabby Vermunt is a Physiotherapist and provides an individualised set up for each athlete.  The process involves a full body muscle strength, length and control assessment followed by personalised set up for the individual and their specific event and relevant exercises to optimise position and efficiency.

She has been a cyclist for more than 10 years mainly competing in road and TT events nationally and internationally, and has just returned from working as Physio with the New Zealand Paracycling Team in Italy at the World Track Champs and Canada for the teams pre Rio summer training camp.

Previously she has completed bike set up courses in New Zealand and upskilled again this past year in Australia.

Gabby is currently available to do bike set ups at the weekends and from October will be establishing a new Physiotherapy Clinic in Invercargill where she is looking forward to being able to provide a bike set up service again on weekdays.
