Southland is well represented in the team selected to represent New Zealand at the UCI Road World Championships, set to take place in Glasgow, Scotland in August.
Corbin Strong (Israel - Premier Tech) has been selected to take part in the Elite men's road race, where he will be joined by a very experienced team including George Bennett, Patrick Bevin, Laurence Pithie, James Oram and Ryan Christensen. Strong's recent performances in the Tour de France, including a top ten stage finish, means that he has shown his ability to mix it with the best sprinters in the world, and the hilly 271km course may well present opportunities for a rider of his talents, with the race finishing with 10 laps of a tricky 14.3km circuit in Glasgow.
Tom Sexton (Bolton Equities - Black Spoke Pro Cycling) has been selected for the Elite men time trial, taking place on the 11th of August, where he will be joined by Finn Fisher-Black. The 47.8km course is on the longer side for a time trial (the only time trial in this year's Tour de France was a mere 22km long in comparison, although it did feature a substantial climb) so it will definitely live up to its moniker as the race of truth.
Cycling Southland will also be represented in the Junior men's road race, which takes place on the 5th of August, with Carter Guichard (AG2R - Citroen) lining up for the event, alongside Eli Tregidga and Finn Wilson. Guichard has been based in Europe this year with his trade team, and has gained loads of experience, which he will hope to put to good use on the challenging circuit - the same that the Elite men will finish their race on.
