Alexandra's Sophie Williamson claimed a title for the small but powerful Central Otago-Wakatipu cycling club at the 2010 national club road championships in Hastings yesterday.

Williamson took out the under-17 girls time trial, while Cycling Southland's Pieter Bulling was third in the under-19 boys, Brooke Brazier was third in the under-15 girls race and Michael Culling was third in the under-15 boys.

Southland coach Ross Machejefski said Bulling's ride was a pleasing one given he still had another year in that age group, while Brazier's ride to get on to the podium had been a great effort.

Sophie McMurdo finished fifth in the under-15 girls race despite dropping a chain. Sonia Waddell, wife of Olympic rowing champion Rob Waddell, won the senior women's time trial, while Ryan Wills was crowned men's under-23 champion and Chris Nicholson took out the senior men's title.

The club nationals continue with the individual road events until Sunday, with the age-group competitors in action today.
