Hi everyone for another week – albeit a shorty with a lovely long weekend ahead – bliss!
But it certainly won’t be a weekend off for Allan Dunn and his trusty Vital Signs Tour de Lakes team as they look after a field of Elite to C Grade and women riders on this weekend’s four-day epic journey around the Central, Southern Lakes District and Fiordland areas. Happy touring to everyone taking part – we wish you a smooth and safe event with some great racing!
Introducing Nick Longworth, Cycling Southland’s new Cycling Development Officer
We are very pleased to introduce Nick Longworth as our new Cycling Development Officer (see photo attached). Nick is a keen endurance cyclist with a background in events – both in schools / universities and business – and is due to start with us on the 28th of April. Nick’s role will be to facilitate and develop our membership, including the development of coaches, volunteers and officials, as well as developing programmes that enhance rider participation.
Nick is due to fly into Queenstown and arrive at 2:15pm on Friday the 25th of April (ANZAC Day).
If anyone is in the area and is able to provide a lift from Queenstown Airport or some temporary accommodation for a few days, can they please get in touch with the office.
Paracycling World Champs
Huge congrats to Laura Fairweather, Kylie Young, Phillipa Gray and the rookie – now World Champ of the team – Emma Foy on their outstanding results at the World Champs in Mexico over the weekend – what results!! Laura has out-done herself to pilot not one but two riders to the world record over two consecutive years – must be because she looks so awesome in a rainbow jersey and the bronze (times two) for Kylie and Philly is a fantastic result Check out the results and photos here
Road Racing
Well done to those who braved the chill factors of that darned cold wind last weekend to take on the Riverton-Tuatapere and back, two-stage race. Check out the full results
A reminder that there is no racing this weekend with the Easter bunny being imminent and the final race of the Summer Road programme will be the Niagara Falls Café 66km Handicap on 26 April. Register here by Thursday 24 April
Easter Closure
A reminder that the Velodrome and Stadium will closed from this Friday until Monday 21 April for the Easter break. Bruce and I will be taking Southland Anniversary Day on Tuesday as well and then it is Anzac Day on Friday - so I will grab the other two days next week for a holiday and will be on leave until the following week. Walter will be in the office 9am-3pm’ish on Tuesday and Bruce and Walter will be in Wednesday and Thursday.
Track sessions on Tuesday-Friday will run as per usual with Lunch Roll, Drafters, Cyclofit and Track Start going ahead.
Club Road Nationals Jerseys
A reminder that if you need Southland kit, let me know as we have very limited stock – I have some put aside for collection for those who have advised.
School Holidays
A reminder over the school holidays that any secondary school/Wheelers & Flyers sessions do not run and take a break for two weeks. We’ll look forward to seeing you back after the break.

We have acquired a number of ‘France’ fabric NZ jerseys in sizes medium, small and extra small (although these are quite large sizings), which we are selling through the office for just $25 per top. If you are keen to try and buy, please swing by the office. To view the garment click here
Crowe Horwath Corporate Pursuit
Our major club fundraiser of the year is looming again with the time trial to be held on Sunday 29 June, from 2pm, and the main event on Sunday 6 July. If anyone is able to lend a hand as an event volunteer on either or both of these days, or if you are able to coach a team, please let me know [email protected] – thanks in advance!
So happy Easter break everyone and all things chocolate and egg-like!
Hope you have a great break and have a great long weekend and start to the school holidays.
Take care out there
