Trust you all had a lovely weekend and got to see some wonderful spring-like sunshine.
It was a big weekend in Aigle, Switzerland for our young gun Kiwi track cycling team at the Junior Worlds and boy were they thrown everything the kitchen sink could deliver – extremely hard-fought racing, illness, crashes, DQs – it was all on!
It was the opening day pursuiters who came out on top with Corbin Strong and his team mates taking gold and the girls taking silver. Then it just got aggressive in more ways than one for our crew.
All-in-all it was very tough and we’re stoked you got a gold Corbin and so sorry you just missed the podium in the Omnium, got DQ’d in the Madison – rough stuff overall! On to the next project now for Corbin as he heads with his Junior World team mates Finn Fisher-Black, Bailey O’Donnell and Kiaan Watts (George Jackson reserve) to the Junior Tour of Wales as Team Skoda Fruzio. The race is from Friday 24 to Monday 27 August. Good luck lads!
Well done also to first-timer Sophie-Leigh Bloxham who made the 1/8 sprint finals and cracked a PB at the same time, and finished sixth in the 500m TT and came in closely contested in the team sprint qualifiers. Super proud of your efforts champs.
Adult Racing & Track
Our new coached adult racing session has started in the former Presidents Convoy slot on Mondays 6-7pm this week. Presidents will move to Thursdays 8-9pm for the next six weeks as a result.
Friday Night Racing
Due to the Tour of Timaru this weekend there will be no Friday night racing this week. The following week is the Cycling Southland annual awards night and then the King House Removals Race Series will return on 7 September.
Another great day resulted in a great turn out for the BNZ Thornbury Handicap race on Saturday. Read the report and results
This Saturday is the TES – Transport Engineering Southland Dacre-Hedgehope-Dacre graded race. Assembly is at the Dacre Hall at 1pm for 1.30pm racing. D & E grades start at Springhills.
The Time Trial scheduled for 11am has been cancelled due to the inappropriate nature of the course and will be rescheduled for another time.
The following weekend, 1 September, is the George Wilson & Sons Limited/Southland Farm Machinery Gore to Waikiwi Classic. A reminder that we will appreciate any offers of volunteer marshals for the day please.
Crossing the centre line
Another rider has been stood down after crossing the centre line at the road race on Saturday. We do not have closed roads to race on so we must restrict racing to the left side of the road. Crossing the centre line has been identified as an area of serious risk and must be managed accordingly. Regardless of your thoughts on what impact it might have on racing, this is a rule that must be adhered to.
Please ensure you are in the right position on the road at all times to avoid crossing the centre line.
Junior Road Racing
With the growth of Junior Riders now road racing on Saturdays, we are looking for some parents, grandparents, supporters or anyone who maybe keen to help manage the D & E grades on Saturdays. This does not have to be every Saturday, but on a rostered basis. Also love to hear from anyone keen on learning how to roll bikes out and operate the Webscorer timing system on occasion, and generally just help the rostered person who is looking after these grades for the day. If you are interested please let Junior Division know and Brendon McLeod will arrange a time to meet and discuss everything you need to know :-)
We’re looking to promote the various social/recreational rides that take place to encourage more people to get involved in road riding. If you are part of a regular group that goes out – and want more people to join you – or you want to get a group going, then get in touch. We want to know when you ride, how long, what the average speed is and the level of experience required. If you’re happy to have newcomers to the sport join you then let us know – we often have people get in touch who are just starting out but don’t know much about the sport and are looking for that mentoring type of person to show them the ropes.
Further to the above, Peter Grandiek, is looking for older road riders to join him in regular rides. He’s heading out on rides by himself, which isn’t ideal, and would love to have someone to ride with, particularly senior riders looking to get active. Contact the office if you’re interested.
